The Chains of a Failing System
For generations, Black families have been told that the public education system is their ticket to a better life. We were told to trust the system, vote for the politicians who promised to fund it, and wait patiently for results. But for millions of our children, particularly those in Democrat-run inner cities, that promise has been broken. The ticket has been voided, and the train to success has left the station without them.
We see the devastating results every day: schools where metal detectors are more common than microscopes, where hallways are unsafe, and where classrooms fail to teach basic reading and math. In cities like Baltimore, Detroit, and Chicago, it is not uncommon to find entire high schools where not a single student can perform at grade level in core subjects. This isn't an inconvenience; it's a systemic betrayal that perpetuates cycles of poverty and limits the potential of our youth.
For too long, the political establishment has offered the same tired excuses and demanded more money for a system that consistently fails the very students it is meant to serve. They tell us to wait for reforms that never come, while their own children are safely enrolled in expensive private schools. This hypocrisy is no longer being ignored.
School Choice: An Escape Hatch to Opportunity
A powerful movement is growing within the Black community, one that rejects the status quo and demands control over our children's future. That movement is school choice. The principle is simple yet revolutionary: public education funding should follow the student, not the institution. Parents, not bureaucrats, should have the power to decide which educational environment—public, private, charter, or even homeschool—is best for their child.
This isn't a partisan gimmick; it's a lifeline. School choice programs, like education savings accounts (ESAs) and vouchers, give low-income families the same opportunities that wealthy families have always had. It allows a mother in a struggling neighborhood to send her son to a school that is safe, academically rigorous, and aligns with her family’s values.
Polling consistently shows that Black Americans are among the strongest supporters of school choice. A 2023 poll by Beck Research, for example, found that 74% of Black voters support school choice. The numbers are even higher among parents. This isn’t a mystery. When your child is trapped in a failing school, you don’t care about political labels; you care about results.
The Real Opposition: Unions and Politicians
So if parents overwhelmingly want it, why is school choice such a political battle? The answer is simple: power and money. The teachers' unions are one of the most powerful special interest groups in America and a major funding source for the Democratic Party. Their primary goal is not educating children; it's protecting their monopoly and the jobs of their members, regardless of performance.
They pour millions of dollars into political campaigns to fight against any policy that introduces competition into the education system. They claim school choice “defunds” public schools, but that argument is fundamentally dishonest. The money doesn't belong to the system; it belongs to the taxpayer for the purpose of educating a child. When a child leaves a failing school, the funding designated for their education should leave with them. The idea that we must continue to fund failing institutions at the expense of our children's futures is absurd.
Conservative Black leaders have been making this case for years. Figures like Senator Tim Scott, Virginia Lt. Governor Winsome Sears, and Dr. Ben Carson have championed educational freedom as a cornerstone of Black empowerment. They understand that true liberation comes from having options, not from being dependent on a government system that has failed us time and again.
The Path Forward Is Freedom
Opponents of school choice are on the wrong side of history. They are fighting to preserve a system that traps Black children in underperforming schools, limiting their horizons before they’ve even had a chance to explore them. The fight for school choice is today’s civil rights battle. It’s a fight for the right to pursue a quality education, the right to a safe learning environment, and the right for parents to direct the upbringing of their own children.
The success stories from states that have embraced educational freedom are undeniable. Students who use choice programs are more likely to graduate and attend college. These programs provide a desperately needed escape route for families who refuse to accept failure as their child's destiny.
Black parents are waking up. We are no longer willing to sacrifice our children’s futures on the altar of political loyalty. We are demanding the freedom to choose, the power to decide, and the opportunity for our kids to achieve the American Dream. School choice is not about abandoning public schools; it's about saving our children from the ones that have already abandoned them.
