The Great Disconnect: Why Liberal Hypocrisy Matters
In American politics, few things are more revealing than the gap between what a leader says and what a leader does. For decades, we’ve been told by progressive politicians that their policies are designed to lift up the disadvantaged, protect the vulnerable, and create a more equitable society. Yet, time and again, we see these same leaders embrace a philosophy that can only be described as “rules for thee, but not for me.” This isn’t just a matter of political gamesmanship; it’s a pattern of hypocrisy that imposes real, damaging consequences on the very communities, particularly Black communities, they claim to champion.
From secure borders and school choice to public safety, the actions of the liberal elite often stand in stark contrast to their public pronouncements. They advocate for policies that they, in their own lives, are insulated from, leaving working-class families to deal with the fallout. This disconnect isn’t an accident; it’s a feature of a political class that views everyday Americans as subjects for their social experiments rather than as fellow citizens deserving of the same security and opportunity they enjoy.
Sanctuary Cities for Everyone but the Elite
For years, progressive mayors and governors have proudly declared their cities and states “sanctuaries” for illegal immigrants, defying federal immigration laws and signaling a welcome to all. This rhetoric sounds compassionate from a podium, but the reality on the ground tells a different story. When the border crisis, exacerbated by the Biden administration’s policies, led to thousands of migrants being bused to these self-proclaimed sanctuaries, the progressive welcome mat was quickly rolled up.
New York City’s Mayor Eric Adams, who once boasted of his city’s sanctuary status, later declared that the influx of migrants “will destroy New York City.” Leaders in Chicago and Massachusetts declared states of emergency, overwhelmed by the logistical and financial strain. Suddenly, the abstract political virtue of open borders became a concrete crisis. But who bears the brunt of this crisis? It isn't the wealthy residents of the Upper East Side or Martha's Vineyard. It's working-class neighborhoods, often predominantly Black and Hispanic, where public schools, hospitals, and social services are stretched to the breaking point. The elite who create these policies live in gated communities, far from the consequences of their virtue signaling.
School Choice for Their Kids, Failing Schools for Ours
Perhaps the most glaring example of this hypocrisy is the progressive stance on education. Powerful teachers' unions and their Democratic allies are the staunchest opponents of school choice, charter schools, and voucher programs. They argue that these initiatives “defund” public education and undermine the traditional school system. Yet, many of these same politicians who fight tooth and nail to trap other people’s children in failing, zip-code-assigned schools make a different choice for their own families.
Barack Obama, for example, sent his daughters to the elite Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., where tuition exceeds $50,000 per year. Countless other prominent Democrats do the same. They understand that a quality education is the ladder to success, and they secure it for their children. At the same time, they actively block legislation that would give Black parents in inner cities the power to use their tax dollars to choose a better educational environment—be it a charter, private, or parochial school—for their own kids. They are effectively pulling up the ladder of opportunity behind them, ensuring that a two-tiered system of education persists: one for the powerful and another for everyone else.
‘Defund the Police’ from Behind Private Security
The call to “Defund the Police” became a rallying cry for the progressive left following the death of George Floyd in 2020. Activists and politicians demanded that cities slash police budgets, claiming it would lead to a more just and safer society. Cities like Minneapolis, Portland, and Austin followed their advice, and the results were catastrophic. Homicide rates and violent crime surged, disproportionately victimizing the Black residents those policies were supposed to help.
Meanwhile, where were the champions of this movement? Members of the progressive “Squad” in Congress, who were among the loudest voices calling to defund law enforcement, were simultaneously spending tens or even hundreds of thousands of taxpayer and campaign dollars on their own private security details. They demand fewer police for your neighborhood, but more for themselves. They understand a fundamental truth that they deny to their constituents: security is essential for a safe and prosperous life. While they remain protected, a grandmother in Chicago or a small business owner in Baltimore is left to fend for themselves in communities made more dangerous by these reckless policies.
A Call for Accountability
This pattern of saying one thing while doing another is more than just hypocrisy; it’s a betrayal of public trust. When leaders promote open borders but panic when migrants arrive in their towns, fight school choice while paying for private school, and call to defund police while hiring private security, they reveal that they don’t truly believe in the policies they push. They see them as tools for political power, not as solutions for the people they represent.
As more Black Americans continue to question their allegiance to the Democratic Party, this duplicity is a major reason why. We are tired of being told what is good for us by people who would never accept those same conditions for themselves. True leadership is not about imposing burdens on others that you are unwilling to bear. It is about fighting for every American to have the same opportunities for safety, education, and prosperity that the political elites reserve for themselves. It’s time we judge our leaders not by their lofty speeches, but by the simple, honest standard of their actions.
