The Unspoken Betrayal of Black Students
For generations, Black families have been told to trust the public education system. We were promised that desegregation and federal funding would level the playing field, offering our children a ladder to success. But for millions, that promise has been broken. In cities run by Democrats for decades—from Baltimore and Detroit to Chicago and Los Angeles—we see the same story: chronically failing schools, dismal test scores, and a culture of low expectations. These institutions, funded by our tax dollars, have become pipelines to poverty, not prosperity.
The political establishment, propped up by powerful teachers' unions, insists that the only solution is to pour more money into the same broken system. They claim that any attempt to give parents other options is an attack on public education. But the real attack is on our children's futures. It’s an attack to trap students in schools that cannot teach them to read at grade level, all while the children of the political elite attend exclusive private academies. This isn't just an educational failure; it's a moral failure and a betrayal of the trust Black families placed in the system.
Parental Power: The Conservative Answer
There is a better way, and it's a solution grounded in a core conservative principle: freedom. School choice is the simple but revolutionary idea that parents, not government bureaucrats, should decide where and how their children are educated. It means that public funding for education should follow the student to the school of their family's choice, whether it's a traditional public school, a public charter school, a private school, or even homeschooling.
This is not about destroying public schools; it's about introducing accountability and competition. When schools have to compete for students, they have a powerful incentive to improve. For too long, the public school system has operated as a monopoly, with no reason to innovate or cater to the needs of its customers—the students and their parents. School choice breaks that monopoly and empowers families to vote with their feet, leaving failing institutions for ones that deliver results.
Prominent Black conservatives have championed this cause for years. Dr. Ben Carson has long argued that education is the great equalizer, and school choice is the key to unlocking that potential for underserved communities. Virginia's Lieutenant Governor, Winsome Sears, made parental rights and school choice central to her victorious campaign. They understand what the liberal establishment refuses to admit: educational freedom is the civil rights issue of our time.
The Growing Movement and Its Fiercest Opponents
The demand for school choice is not a top-down political movement; it’s a grassroots rebellion led by parents who are fed up with the status quo. The numbers don't lie. A 2023 poll from RealClearOpinion found that a staggering 71% of Black voters support school choice. This isn't a fringe idea; it's a mainstream demand from families desperate for better options.
So why is there such fierce opposition? The answer is simple: power and money. Teachers' unions, like the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the National Education Association (NEA), are among the largest donors to the Democratic Party. Their power depends on maintaining a government-run monopoly on education. School choice threatens that power by giving families control over their children's education funds.
When union leaders like Randi Weingarten rail against school choice, they claim they are protecting public education. But what they are truly protecting is their own influence and the jobs of underperforming teachers. They are willing to sacrifice the future of countless Black children to preserve their political power. They label school choice advocates as privatizers, but the real agenda is trapping families in a system that serves the adults, not the students.
A Path to a Brighter Future
Wealthy families have always had school choice. They can afford to move to districts with excellent public schools or pay for expensive private tuition. School choice simply gives low-income and working-class families, particularly Black families, the same opportunities.
Allowing a child’s educational destiny to be determined by their ZIP code is an injustice. It perpetuates cycles of poverty and limits the potential of millions. The fight for school choice is a fight to give every child, regardless of their background, a chance to achieve the American Dream. It is a declaration that Black parents know what is best for their children and a rejection of the paternalistic idea that a government bureaucracy knows better.
The tide is turning. More states are passing school choice legislation, and more Black families are making their voices heard. This is not a Republican or Democrat issue; it is a parental rights issue. It is about empowering families, creating competition, and finally delivering on the promise of a quality education for every single American child.
