Rules for Thee: The Unspoken Creed of Modern Liberalism

The Progressive Double Standard

In politics, consistency is a rare virtue, but the modern progressive movement has elevated hypocrisy to an art form. We are constantly lectured by liberal politicians, activists, and media figures about how we should live our lives—what cars to drive, which schools our children should attend, and how much policing our neighborhoods deserve. Yet, time and again, the very people dictating these rules live in a world completely insulated from the consequences of their own policies. This isn't just a series of isolated gaffes; it's a governing philosophy of "rules for thee, but not for me," and a growing number of Americans, including many in the Black community, are taking notice.

Sanctuary Cities and the Border Crisis

For years, progressive mayors in cities like New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. proudly declared themselves “sanctuary cities.” They virtue-signaled their compassion for illegal immigrants, criticizing border states for enforcing federal immigration laws. Mayor Eric Adams of New York once welcomed migrants with open arms, promising the city would remain a safe haven. However, when Republican governors in Texas and Arizona began busing migrants to these self-proclaimed sanctuaries, the compassionate rhetoric quickly evaporated.

Suddenly, Mayor Adams complained that his city was being “destroyed” by the influx. Washington D.C.’s Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a public emergency. The hypocrisy was stunning. These leaders were happy to support open-border policies as an abstract concept when the burden fell on communities thousands of miles away. But when faced with the direct consequences—strained schools, overwhelmed shelters, and depleted social services in their own backyards—they demanded federal bailouts and decried the situation as a crisis. They exposed the reality that their progressive policies were never designed to be sustainable, only to be applauded from a safe distance.

Climate Elites and Their Carbon Footprints

Another glaring example of this double standard is the climate change debate. We are told by figures like former Secretary of State John Kerry that humanity faces an existential threat and must make drastic sacrifices. We’re encouraged to give up gas-powered cars, eat less meat, and lower our thermostats. Meanwhile, these same climate crusaders fly on private jets to international conferences in exotic locations, generating more carbon emissions in a single trip than the average American family does in a year. They purchase oceanfront mansions in places like Martha's Vineyard while warning the rest of us about rising sea levels. Their message is clear: climate change is a crisis for the common person, but a networking opportunity for the global elite.

Defunding the Police While Hiring Private Security

Perhaps the most dangerous form of liberal hypocrisy involves public safety. During the summer of 2020, the “Defund the Police” movement became a progressive rallying cry. Politicians and activists demanded that police departments be dismantled or have their budgets slashed, dismissing concerns about rising crime as right-wing fearmongering. Yet many of these same advocates enjoy the protection of private security or taxpayer-funded police details.

Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri, a vocal supporter of defunding the police, was revealed to have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds on her own private security. When asked about it, she stated, “I’m going to make sure I have security because I know I have had attempts on my life.” Her safety, it seems, is non-negotiable. But what about the safety of her constituents in St. Louis, a city plagued by one of the highest homicide rates in the nation? For them, fewer police officers on the street is presented as social progress. This is the ultimate betrayal: removing protection from the vulnerable while ensuring the powerful remain secure.

Trapped in Failing Schools

Nowhere is the hypocrisy more damaging than in education. For decades, Democrats have fiercely opposed school choice, vouchers, and charter schools, often at the behest of powerful teachers' unions. They argue that these programs “defund” public schools and trap poor, often minority, children in a system that has failed them for generations. Yet, many of the most powerful opponents of school choice, including former President Barack Obama, sent their own children to elite, expensive private schools.

They know that a quality education is the key to a successful life, and they secure it for their own families. But for low-income families in struggling neighborhoods, their only option is the local, underperforming public school. By denying them a choice, they deny them a chance. This position isn't about protecting public education; it's about protecting a political monopoly, even at the expense of our children's futures.

A Betrayal of Trust

This pattern of hypocrisy is more than just politically embarrassing; it is a fundamental betrayal of public trust. It reveals an elitist mindset that views ordinary citizens as subjects to be managed, not as free people capable of making their own decisions. It’s why common-sense Americans are growing skeptical of leaders who demand sacrifice from everyone but themselves.

Black voters, long considered a reliable voting bloc for the Democratic Party, are increasingly questioning this dynamic. We see that the consequences of these failed policies—rising crime, failing schools, and strained community resources—fall hardest on our neighborhoods. The progressive promise of a better future rings hollow when the architects of that future refuse to live in it. True leadership isn't about delivering a good speech; it's about living by the principles you claim to champion. On that count, modern liberalism is failing spectacularly.
